Preferred Courses and Colleges under Engineering and Pharmacy-After Phase 2- KEAM 2020

Dr.Santhosh.S, Former Joint Commissioner for Entrance Examinations, Kerala

The last rank analysis of KEAM 2020 has indicated interesting trends among the courses under Engineering stream and Pharmacy after the publication of second phase of allotments . It seems that the meritorious aspirants have turned down their choices against new generation courses like Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Machine Learning, Robotics, etc which have initiated at under graduate technical courses of the state,. Rather it can be seen a revisit of the conventional engineering branches like Computer Science Engineering (CS) followed by Electronics & Communications Engineering (EC), Electrical & Electronics Engineering (EE) etc in B.Tech courses even pushing down Mechanical Engineering (ME), Civil Engineering (CE) which were marked as the most demanded courses in yester years. There observed a specific trend in favour of Applied Electronics & Instrumentation branch as the choice of aspiring candidates for technical education in the year 2020.

The analysis of last ranks of KEAM 2020 after the second phase of online allotments done by the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations (CEE) during 2020, has indicated continuing trends favouring Computer Science Engineering (CS) course as the most demanded course and the College of Engineering, Trivandum (TVE) as the most favoured technical institution as per the prioritization of the meritorious aspirants for higher learning.

The aspirants of engineering courses have favoured College of Engineering, Trivandum (TVE) in all the six most preferred engineering courses during 2020.The top meritorious candidates have chosen Computer Science Engineering as their first choice to join the College of Engineering, Trivandum for their higher studies. The last rank of allotment in Computer Science Engineering (CS) was 247 under state merit (SM) category.

The second preferred course was Electronics & Communications Engineering (Last Rank of EC-337) which is followed by Electrical & Electronics Engineering (Last Rank of EE-796), Mechanical Engineering (Last Rank of ME-881 ), Applied Electronics (Last Rank of AE-1480), and Civil Engineering (Last Rank of CE-1765). The preferred courses included Chemical Engineering (CH) in Thrissur Government Engineering college with 2977 as the last rank of allotment followed by Agricultural Engineering Course (AG) in Kelappaji College of Engineering & Technology, Tavanur with last rank of 4636 and Industrial Engineering (IE) at TVE with Last Rank of 4962.

The College of Engineering, Trivandrum (TVE) followed by Thrissur Government Engineering college (TCR), TKM College of Engineering, Kollam (TKM) and Government Engineering college, Barton Hill,Trivandrum( TRV), Govt. Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Technology, Kottayam (KTE) are the most preferred destinations of engineering courses under government sector .

In Government Controlled Self-financing engineering colleges a similar pattern is observed with Model Engineering College, Trikkakara leading with meritorious candidates followed by Sri Chithira Thirunal College of Engineering (SCT), College of Engineering, Chengannur (CHN) and LBS Institute of Technology (LBT) for women as the prominent destinations of higher learning. Another trend favouring College of Engineering, Perumon (PRN),College of Engineering, Thalassery (TLY) and College of Engineering, Attingal(CEA) is also observed in choosing EE and ME courses by the aspirants which is a characteristic of 2020.

Among the private self-financing engineering colleges, very few institutions are marked with last rank of allotments below 10000 that to in the demanded course of Computer Science Engineering in Rajagiri School of Engineering and Technology (RET-LR 4174) followed by Federal Institute of Science & Technology (FIT-LR 7545) and Muthoot Institute of Technology & Science (MUT-LR 7557).The new generation courses introduced this year have not received any favouring trends except, Computer Science Engineering with Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning course of SCT which had attracted meritorious candidates where the last rank of allotment was 4138 followed by RET in Artificial Intelligence with Data Analysis (LR-8879).

The state government has adopted a progressive policy on admissions to the undergraduate technical institutions reserving ten percent of supernumerary seats to the economically weaker sections of the forward communities of the state in 2020.This movement has favoured in offering admissions to the economically weaker (EW) category up to the rank of 25881 in Government Engineering colleges compared to the last rank of allotment of 51941 under Government Controlled Self-financing and last rank of 53129 under Private Self-financing Engineering colleges under EW category.

In Government Engineering colleges, candidates up to the rank of 10429 have received allotment while in Government Controlled Engineering colleges, it was 45020 and in Private Self-financing Engineering colleges the last rank of allotment was 53229 under state merit category out of the total 53236 qualified candidates in the KEAM rank list .

The first allotment to the Architecture course was done along with the second phase of KEAM 2020.The most favoured Government institutions to pursue the Architecture course was College of Engineering, Trivandrum (TVE) with Last (Architecture) Rank of allotment 23 followed by Thrissur Government Engineering college (TCR-Last Rank of allotment 104) and TKM College of Engineering, Kollam( TKM-Last Rank of allotment 115).Among the Private Self-financing Architecture colleges the prominent choices were MES School of Architecture, Kuttippuram (MRR – Last Rank of allotment 268), College of Architecture, Trivandrum (NVR- Last Rank of allotment 277) and Avani Institute of Design, Kozhikkode (AVR- Last Rank of allotment 300) while candidates up to the Architecture rank of 1871 were received allotments in Architecture course.

Under medical stream, Pharmacy course was preferred in College of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Kozhikkode followed by Trivandrum and Allapuzha Government Pharmacy Colleges. Among Self-financing Pharmacy colleges JDT Islam College of Pharmacy, Kozhikkode( JDB-Last rank 4241) and Holy Grace Academy of Pharmacy, Thrissur (HGB- Last rank 4751) have been favoured by the aspirants. Candidates up to the rank of 15735 was allotted under Pharmacy course out of the total of 47081 candidates included in the Pharmacy rank list.
