Students passing SSLC can go for ITI courses for technical education. They include training in civil draughtsman, surveying, fitting, electrician, radio and TV mechanics, motor vehicle mechanics, IT and electronics system maintenance and welding. Many firms offer apprenticeship programmes too. With a number of job openings in Singapore, Australia and other countries in such trades, there is a huge demand for these courses.

In some states like Karnataka a Diploma too can be earned in various fields of engineering.  According to the Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), a student who has completed three years of diploma is eligible to join the third semester in any engineering course. Some colleges also offer ‘earn while you learn’ courses.

SSLC pass students can go for Ophthalmic Technician course also. In different states in India there are different institutions for all courses.  

A diploma in music or dance too can be chosen.

 Many institutes offer courses in hospitality. Programmes like one-year diploma courses in bakery and confectionery, hotel reception and book-keeping, restaurant and counter service are available in plenty.

A basic or advanced diploma course in beauty therapy lasts for a maximum of six months.

Both computer science and IT have relatively equal job chances. However computer science offers advancement in studies like going for PhD etc. The financial recession has affected these fields considerably in the present day schenario. However, if the world economy comes out of the recessionary trend, then one can expect a boom in these two fields. No expert is giving a guarantee for a sudden recovery. Things are changing for the better but there are setbacks like in the case of Dubai Port World.

There are opportunities in both the streams now and several companies are hiring freshers now, though on a limited scale. Nowadays students are showing more interest in traditional branches like Mechanical, civil, electrical and electronics. They are doing it as a safe bet in any climate. You may do so.  If you come out with high marks and can ensure a campus placement in IT/CSC, well and good. Even now at prestigious institutes campus placements are taking place. You can earn well also from and IT career.

Two years from now it is possible that IT bounces back to its preeminence. This will happen only if the recession goes. It is too early to predict anything. If you come out with top class performance in any of the branches, you need not worry about opportunities

Since a major portion of the course is to be gone through, you may have to discontinue the course and then take leave from the organisation you join, later and take re-admission to complete the course. The sanctioning of leave by the Organisation will depend on the terms and condtions of employment also.

Undergarduate Courses in Commerce are generally of three year duration. It is not known if there is any degree courses conducted anywhere of less than 3 years duration. Even if conducted, the approval of that course for higher studies and employment will have to be ascertained. Try to do a course that is approved so that you do not have problems later.

It is not mainly the range of mark that matters but the rank in the AIEEE. Marks can vary from year to year for different rank ranges. The opening and closing ranks for 2008 admissions at NIT Calicut is given in its site . Data for 2009 will be made available later in this link. Keep watching.
