The computer science and Information Technology branches are staging a comeback after the recent recession. Anyway it depends on your taste and how you can fare in a branch that determines your future. If you can come out with flying colours most of the branches will give you nice placement. Mechanical is a very good branch.

Mechanical engineering, the broadest of all Engineering disciplines deals with design and production of tools, machines and all other mechanical equipment to be used in industries. The industry offers a wide choice of options extending across many interdisciplinary interdependent specialties. Mechanical engineering is concerned with all types of machinery in industries and all aspects of their mechanism and functioning; the design, development, construction, production, installation, operation and maintenance; such as large steam and gas turbines, components of thermal power stations, internal combustion engines, jet engines, machine tools, air conditioning and heating machines, refrigerators etc to name a few. They not only design and create new products, but also develop materials for them and ways of making them.

You may contact the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) centre in Gujarat to know whether the university is conducting such a course. IGNOU's certificates have international validity.

To appear for GATE there is no mark restriction for BTech. According to a rough estimate at least 20 percent of total students who write GATE are third year students. Usually third year students write GATE while in the final year they cannot. After BTech final results, students prepare for GATE and write it.You being a civil student, there is nothing wrong in going for architecture, especially if you have a special passion for it. Now you are in 2nd year. Don't think about GATE and after MTech. Concentrate on your studies. Fourth semester exam will be held within one month or so. After two years the trend may change. So a predication about the scope Archtecture now will be meaningless. Anyway Civil will have scope at any point of time because it is a core branch. Wish you all the best.
