Photonics is a subject that has evolved as a result of the fusion of optical technology with electronics. It is the use of light to obtain, convey or process information. It is the science of mastering the techniques involved in the emission, detection, transmission and modulation of light. This sub-discipline of physics deals with the study of photons, the elementary particle of light. It also deals with the instruments required such as laser guns, optical fibers, optometric instruments etc. In Photonic system, information signals are conveyed as pulses of light and these optical signals are transmitted through optical fibres. The M.Sc. course in Photonics includes subjects like Physics, Mathematics, Electronics, Applied Optics, Quantum Optics, Instrumentation and Computer Science.
Photonics based companies and R&D institutions need people trained in photonics and allied areas. Photonics has made deep impacts in areas like communication, computing and control as well as in fields like medicine, industry, defense and entertainment. One can work for telecommunication companies or variety of other industries and R & D organizations involved in the area of networks, semiconductor technology, fibre and integrated optics, optoelectronics and software. Photonics specialists can work as Engineers, technicians or technologists, research officers in government and industry laboratories. Manufacturing, design, research, development, systems and applications are some of the fields they work in. The range of application of Photonics extends from energy generation and detection to communication and information processing. The Photonics scientist has to do more research work on Photonics, while the engineers design Photonic equipments. The Photonics technician helps the engineers in designing and manufacturing. Job s can be there in companies like HCL, TCS and institutions like ISRO, Dept. of Atomic Energy etc. This is very much research oriented subject and so you must have some interest to do active research.

If you can handle both simultaneously, without affecting both, there is nothing wrong in preparing for Civil Services along with a Professional Course. You must keep in kind that a Professional Course needs good effort to be completed successfully. Your preparations for Civil Service should not affect your normal study ..

It may depend on the University you are doing the course. Since the BA Admission will be based on your Plus two result, there should not be any issue writing the backlog papers. Contact the examination/academic section of the University where you did the course.

There is no entrance examination for Engineering admission s in Tamil Nadu, under TNEA process

CUSAT has Lateral Entry for B Tech Programmes. Admission is given to the 3rd Semester (second year) of the Programme. Applicant should have three year Diploma in Engineering / Technology awarded by a Board of Technical Education recognised by the Department of Technical Education, Government of Kerala, with not less than 60% marks. The maximum age prescribed is 25 years as on 1st July of the academic year. Details for the admissions of 2020 can be seen in the Prospectus available at https://admissions.cusat.ac.in/. Application deadline for the current year is over.
